The University of Trento proved to have the best Italian standards according to ministerial evaluation criteria, assigned according to the quality of the research and didactics. The University placed itself in 1st position before the Politecnico di Torino and the Politecnico di Milano. On a competitive basis, the University was able to obtain research projects funded by the European Commission.

The University also achieved excellent positions in rankings in National magazines and newspapers.

All Faculties of the University of Trento have remained on the podium of the best universities of Italy in the 2009-2010 edition of the Grandi Guide created by “La Repubblica” with Censis and Somedia.

1st places to Law and Engineering, 2nd place to Economics, Sociology and Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences and third place to Arts and Humanities. The Faculty of Cognitive Sciences is not taken into consideration since it is the only kind in Italy. The productivity, the quality of didactics and research and the International relations are the indicators used by Censis.

In the general ranking, Trento confirmed 4th place among medium-sized universities, between 10.000 and 20.000 students. The evaluation considers student services, scholarships and collaboration grants, seats available in classrooms, libraries and scientific laboratories, sport facilities, functionality and content of the university website.

In the 2010 Campus Guide to university, the University of Trento earns itself 2nd place among general universities (with various disciplines) with a number of 10.000 to 50.000 students enrolled.
The ranking measures university performances according to students’ performances, the appropriateness of structures, the quality of services, the value of research, internationalization, but it also evaluates important aspects for student life such as how qualifications can be used, the transparency of information, evaluation. The average taxation is calculated according to the total resources of the Università.

In the “Sole 24 Ore” ranking, the University of Trento is in 7th place among Italian universities. The indicators used were didactics and research: employment of young graduates, attractiveness, graduation within limits foreseen, overcrowding, the quality of research, funds available for scientific research and the ability to attract external financing.

In the new ranking of world universities “World University Rankings 2009”, edited by Quacquarelli Symonds for Times Higher Education, the University seems to be one of the few Italian universities on the list, confirming its placement in the 401-500 bracket.
The parameters considered are: opinion of selected experts for different disciplines (peer review), opinion of societies that recruit graduate employees, relation between lecturers and students, publications and quotations gathered in the 2004-2008 five-year period according to the Scopus database, bibliographical data bank that contains information about publications and quotations, presence of foreign professors and students.
Besides the “general” ranking, another five rankings have been carried out per macro scientific areas. The area of engineering and information technology of the university of Trento places itself in place 248, Science is in place 212 and economic and social studies in place 247.

History of the University of Trento

The University of Trento was founded in 1962 as a higher University institute for social sciences. It then became the Faculty of sociology thanks to the Provincial President, Bruno Kessler whose aim was to modernize a rather conservative and traditional society.

The impact with the city was quite contradictory: the University was seen both as a motivating force for cultural openness and the creation of a new leading class, but also as a fracturing element of protest. Trento's prestige- for some to be forgotten and negative, for others fruitful and positive- starts towards the end of the sixties. In these years infact, there is a high presence in town of young people inspired by ideals of changing the world. The University thus, contributed in livening up a motionless city which really needed to be shaken. Since then, the relation between the University and the territory started to change and move further towards a cooperative relation rather than the relation of contrast it was before.

In order to expand the educational opportunities of the University of Trento, in 1972 the Faculty of Science was founded (with a two year engineering course) and in 1973 so was the Faculty of Economics. The academic project was even more improved in 1984 with the Faculties of Arts and Humanities and Law and in 1985 with the Faculty of Engineering. In the meanwhile, the initial institute was changed into Libera Università degli Studi (free university of studies) and then into Università Statale (public university) in 1983 with a statute which guaranteed the University's self governing competences. Recently, in 2004 the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences in Rovereto was also founded.

Today the relation between the University and the territory has strengthend and the University is considered a resource for social, cultural and economic development. The academic structures are not only open to an academic public. The city feels the University as a value to be proud of. The University has, infact, been able to put itself into the position of an intelligent and attentive interlocuter towards local reality, without quitting an international dimension which, from the classrooms and laboratories, spreads among the community.
