History
The Medical College of Wisconsin was founded in 1893 as the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1913 the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Milwaukee Medical College merged to become the Marquette University School of Medicine.
In 1967 Marquette University, due to financial constraints, terminated its sponsorship of the medical school. The school then continued as a private, national, freestanding institution. Its name was changed in 1970 to the Medical College of Wisconsin. The College has approximately 13,500 alumni.
The Medical College of Wisconsin is a private, freestanding medical school dedicated to leadership and excellence in advancing the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease and injury through:
* Education – preparing the physicians and scientists of tomorrow while enhancing the skills of today's health professionals
* Discovery – creating new knowledge in basic, translational, and patient-based research to improve human health
* Patient Care – providing effective, compassionate, expert care for patients
* Community Engagement – partnering with public and private organizations to enhance learning, research, patient care and the health of the community
Education
There are 1,235 students enrolled in educational programs at the Medical College. This includes 795 medical students, and 440 graduate students.
College faculty supervise approximately 650 physicians in residency training and 175 physicians in fellowship training through the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals.
Approximately 200 scientists are engaged in postdoctoral research fellowship training through the Office of Postdoctoral Education.
The College provides continuing medical education to more than 15,000 health professional registrants each year.
