Descrizione dell'università (origine: sito web ufficiale dell'università)

Furman University is the oldest, largest and most selective private institution in South Carolina. Founded in 1826, Furman moved three times in its early years before being charted as Furman University and settling in Greenville in 1850. The most recent move was in 1961, when Furman relocated to its current 800-acre location on the outskirts of Greenville.

The move to the stunning, new campus served as a catalyst for Furman’s ongoing transformation from a primarily regional college to one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the United States. Today Furman offers majors and programs in 42 subjects and is one of the select group of colleges that qualify for a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s most prestigious academic honorary society. Undergraduates come from 46 states and 31 countries.

Campus:
Situated in the scenic Carolina foothills on a beautifully designed 750-acre campus, Furman has 32 major buildings on campus, most of which are faced with handmade Virginia brick. The campus includes a 30-acre lake, 18-hole golf course and numerous gardens.

Enrollment
For the Fall 2007 term enrollment is 2601, 1456 women and 1145 men. Of this student body 7.0% are African-American, 2.7% are Asian, 1.6% are Hispanic, and 1.4% are multiracial. The entering freshman class for 2007 is composed of 413 women and 287 men, of which 6.4% are African-American, 3.1% are Asian, 1.6% are Hispanic, and 1.1% are multiracial. 46 states and 40 countries are represented in the student body.

Programs of Study and Degrees
Furman offers majors in 41 subjects, the ability to choose a supplementary concentration, such as Women's Studies, Latin American Studies, Classical Studies or Environmental Studies. Additionally, a teacher education program and Premedical, Prelaw and Preministry as well as Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Nursing and ROTC programs are available. Students can participate in cooperative programs in Engineering and Forestry and Environmental Studies and may also craft an individualized curriculum program. The university offers the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Liberal Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees.

Scholarships
Academic and Special Scholarships

Due to the emphasis Furman places on academic excellence, it offers a number of merit-based and departmental scholarships to students who demonstrate very strong ability based on their academic achievements and standardized test scores, or who are gifted in other areas.

International freshman:

Furman offers very limited financial aid to international students. It offers only two full scholarships to two incoming international freshmen per year. These freshman scholarships are highly competitive and based on academic excellence, strong standardized test scores, and fit to Furman. In order to be considered for these scholarships, a student must submit their application by January 15, 2008. There is not a separate application required to be considered for an international scholarship, only the application for admission.

It does not offer any international transfer scholarships.
