| Scholarships or student grants program description |
The Informatics and Virtual Reality Group at the International Digital Lab, WMG and the School of Health and Social Studies, both at the University of Warwick are currently seeking a PhD student to join a growing multi-disciplinary research team working in the area of innovative home based personalised rehabilitation service model.
This collaborative studentship aims to research and develop a new rehabilitation environment; Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CARE); its acceptance within rehabilitation community; and the development of innovative rehabilitation service model. CARE will be designed by targeting the patients with impairments of limbs (upper & lower) caused as a result of stroke, fall (dementia), injuries (accident), etc. Limb impairments are the most common and crucial for daily life. Existing rehabilitation services have shown that with the right level of rehabilitation it is possible to regain control of the limbs, leading to improved quality of life & independence. The proposed research is not to replace the hospital based rehabilitation treatment, but to complement it by providing additional extended rehabilitation services post discharge, with specific focus on scenarios in which patients, at their own homes, interact with computer-based serious games using rehabilitation 3D interaction devices to perform rehabilitation exercises. Games will be used to boost patient motivation to participate in rehabilitation without thinking of the drudgery of exercises. It is believed that this approach takes into account cognitive and affective-motivational aspects of the patient, which enhances intensive rehabilitation, leading to faster recovery.
Essential Requirements
A 1st or 2:1 honours degree in Computer Science/Biomedical Engineering/Engineering/Physiotherapy with a strong background in computer programming and serious games. Due to the co-supervision of this project between the WMG and Health & Social Studies, we are able to consider candidates from a range of disciplines. An interest in the social impact of technology is essential. You will be trained in social science research methods.
For eligibility please check at: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/PostgraduateTraining/StudentEligibility.htm
Desirable Requirements
Recent experience of conducting a research project
Keen interest in computer programming and serious games
Knowledge of current rehabilitation process
The PhD studentship is fully funded by ESRC and EPSRC at the UK/EU rate for 3 years, and carries a tax-free maintenance stipend (approximately £12,500), plus potential for additional income through teaching assistance and project supervision. There will also be opportunities for funded international travel through attendance at conferences. This is an exciting time to be joining Warwick's multi-disciplinary research community. The successful candidate can look forward to studying in a well-resourced environment with state of the art facilities, and developing the necessary transferable skills to be an independent researcher.
Candidates would be required to start as soon as possible.
