The Welsh School of Pharmacy at Cardiff University invites applications for an Industrial CASE Studentship funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Novartis.
Project Title: In vivo examination of viral exacerbations of airways inflammation, function, mucus hypersecretion and mucociliary clearance
Supervisors: Professor K J Broadley, Dr Emma Kidd, Dr Will Ford
Start Date: 1st October 2009
Project Description: The research will involve models of airways diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and their exacerbation by viral infection. The mechanisms of drug interventions will be examined against airways function, inflammation and mucus secretion. The research group has extensive experience with the models to be used. The project will involve a period of study of at least three months at the collaborating Company, Novartis, Horsham, Sussex.

Funding Amount: UK/EU Fees plus enhanced stipend (meets the National Minimum Doctoral Stipend level of £13,290 for 2009/10, plus an industrial enhancement) including support for travel to conferences.
Awarding Bodies: Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Novartis (via CASE Industrial Partnership).
Eligibility
Residency: This studentship is open to UK and EU applicants. Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals, and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements. To be eligible for the full award, EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education. EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees-only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of their proposed programme of study.
Academic Criteria: Candidates should possess a minimum of an Upper second class honours degree in pharmacology, pharmacy, physiology or biomedical sciences. In addition, candidates should preferably have some experience with practical pharmacological techniques.
